FAQs

How big are the needles?

Acupuncture needles resemble more of a pin! These needles are really fine filiform (not hollow) needles. They come in all lengths and some are almost as thin as a strand of hair.

How many needles do you use?

It depends on the presentation. The average is somewhere between 4-18 needles in one treatment.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

I’m going to be honest: it varies. We are all different. Sometimes there is a strong sensation if we find a point of stuck energy. If it does please say so!  You might feel a slight pinch at the sight of the needle but beyond that it is mostly painless. What you are looking to feel is a dull, crampy, warm or heavy sensation; this means the needle is doing its job.

What does Acupuncture do?

The simple answer is that it increases circulation of blood and lymph, tones the nervous system, and improves optimal function of the body. The first thing most of our patients experience, even after one treatment, is improved quality of sleep. Some other common improvements, even if it is not the focus, is regular menstrual cycles, regular quality bowel movements, less anxiety, and better digestion.

What should I wear?

Most acupuncture treatments use the arms, legs, abdomen and back. Loose clothing is what is suggested to wear. There are some situations where disrobing is necessary, however proper draping with a sheet or blanket is always used.

Should I do/ not do anything or eat before getting treatment?

Yes. Make sure you are well hydrated, by drinking plenty of water and you have at least a small snack before getting on the table.

What training do you have as an acupuncturist?

I have a Masters Degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. The masters program I attended was 4 years long with over 3000 hours of training combined in Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Western Medicine, Chinese herbal medicine, food therapy and essential oils. In the last 2 years of the masters, we received over 850 hours of hands on clinical training with acupuncture needles and Chinese herbs, all while treating 400+ patients in order to graduate from the program. Along with this extensive training, I took and passed four national board exams in order to receive the  license to practice in North Carolina. In order to maintain  licensure in NC, we are required to take 40 hours of continuing education every two years.
